Happy New Year: 2017 offers hope for healing old wounds

Saying good-bye to 2016 isn't hard. The year will be remembered largely for the damage wreaked by Hurricane Matthew and the divisiveness of the elections, and will not be missed by most Wayne County residents.

The new year always comes with the promise of better times and we are among those optimists who believe 2017 will bring about healing for our state and nation. We hope you are having a good start to the new year and that it brings happiness and success in every endeavor. Hope, that never-ending belief that tomorrow will be a better day, fills our hearts and minds at this time of year and we fervently wish the best for you and your family in the coming months.

There will certainly be struggles ahead, but we are firm in our conviction that the future holds good things for our county, our state and our America.

So as you sit down for the traditonal meal of collards and black-eyed peas, count your blessings and pray for peace and understanding. We are in need of both.
