Modernization: Purchase of advanced computer software will help law enforcement

The acquisition of new computer software by the Goldsboro City Council and the Wayne County Board of Commissioners will help bring the city Police Department and county Sheriff's Office into the 21st century.

This week, both public bodies approved the purchase of new software that will streamline work for the respective agencies.

It is a wise move and one that will benefit residents of Goldsboro and Wayne County for years to come.

The new software will reduce the amount of paperwork necessary by linking law enforcement, dispatch and emergency services into one communication system countywide, officials said. It will give police officers, deputies and other emergency personnel instant access to records, evidence and other information on computers and even hand-held devices.

Police Chief Mike West said the new software will push his department ahead 10 years.

The public will be safer because of the ability of officers in the field to make quicker decisions based on the information they will have at hand. And officers will be safer because of the information they will have at their fingertips.

The elected officials who decided to spend the money to buy the software are to be commended for being so forward thinking.
