Go home: With hurricane help approved, lawmakers should call it quits

Now that the General Assembly has completed its work on Hurricane Matthew relief, lawmakers should hightail it out of Raleigh as soon as possible.

Although there has been little talk yet of packing the Supreme Court, the longer the Legislature stays in session, the more politicking that goes on and the less the average constituent likes it.

The state's residents grow weary quickly of the actions of the House and Senate whenever they get free time on their hands and this special session is no exception. We understand the Republican majority's desire to weaken Democratic Gov.-elect Roy Cooper's powers but that doesn't make it right. We did not endorse Cooper but he was elected fair and square and lawmakers should respect the people's will as expressed at the ballot box.

It is just such partisan politics that makes voters mistrust politicians.
