Special session: Lawmakers should stick to hurricane business
North Carolina's General Assembly convenes today in special session to address the state's needs for rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Matthew in the eastern part of the state and the wildfires that struck the mountains.
They should stick to the business at hand, make it short and simple, and get out of Raleigh as fast as possible.
We, like some others, fear that some lawmakers will try to use the session to advance other bills, such as an attempt to "pack" the state Supreme Court with two new justices to preserve a Republican majority -- an idea we strongly oppose.
Special sessions are supposed to be called for a single purpose, and we don't like the idea of legislators running around Jones Street trying to finagle other legislative business when they have pressing matters at hand.
