Main Street: Goldsboro should be proud of downtown recognition

The city of Goldsboro and the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. have been selected as a national semifinalist in the first-ever Great American Main Street Award program.

It is an honor richly deserved and one

that everyone in Wayne County should take pride in.

Whether the city wins the contest or not, it is an honor to merely be selected as one of the 10 cities across the nation deserving of a nomination.

A lot of work has gone into the revitalization of downtown Goldsboro in the past few years, and it is satisfying to know that all that work has been recognized.

Scores of downtown buildings have received a facelift, and many new businesses have sprung up, giving downtown a lively atmosphere that, sadly enough, many small cities lack.

The credit for the honor belongs to the many people involved in the revitalization efforts, especially the DGDC leadership, the business owners involved and the city council, which had the foresight to support the projects involved, especially Streetscape, which was not always popular. Change is difficult to swallow, but Goldsboro's leaders, in both the public and the private sector, saw the need for it, and it has paid off.
