Fair time: Wayne fair is a treat that comes once a year

The Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair opens Thursday, and if you aren't planning on visiting the carnival on the edge of town you are going to miss a treat.

Wayne has the best local fair in the state -- proven by the trophies it wins year after year --and it offers something for everyone, whether you are farm bred or not. From the Ferris wheel to the livestock shows, from the handicraft exhibits to the cotton candy and candy apples, there is something for you and your family at the fair.

Wayne's fair is so good it can't be contained in a mere week, so it runs for 10 days, until Oct. 8. During its run there will be activities to take part in and entertainment to enjoy on a daily basis, from games on the midway to the talent contests featuring local youngsters.

The fair is the one time of the year that the agricultural side of life in eastern North Carolina is on full display. Agriculture remains the backbone of life in these parts, and you should take at least one evening to take it in.

But the fair isn't all educational. It's about having fun in a family-friendly atmosphere. So grab the kids and head on out to the fairgrounds south of Goldsboro. You'll be glad you did.
