HB2 at home: Local school officials are working on developing policy

Much has already been said about the effects of House Bill 2, the state law that requires people to use the public restroom of their natural gender and not the gender they identify themselves with.

But so far the discussion has been about how the issue will be handled statewide. Now it is time for Wayne County school officials to determine a policy regarding the law.

It will not be easy.

State officials are under a lot of pressure to change the law and open all public restrooms to transgender people. We have expressed our opposition to that a number of times. We simply believe it is wrong for a man or boy, although he identifies himself as a female, to be able to use a restroom reserved for women and girls.

We are not about to change our minds on the issue. The legislature doesn't appear to be ready to change its mind, either.

But economic pressure to change the law is already being applied, the latest being the pulling of championship sporting events from the state by both the NCAA and the ACC.

What this all means for Wayne County schools is yet to be determined. We believe if you feel strongly either way on the issue that you should contact your school board representative and let them know how you feel. At some point, they will be charged with coming up with a policy. They should know how the people who elected them feel about it before they do.
