Preaching to the choir: Donald Trump excites eastern N.C. supporters

You could hear the whooping and hollering for a country mile Tuesday evening when Republican Donald Trump appeared before a crowd of supporters at the Greenville Convention Center.

These were Trump's kind of people, from men in business suits and women in Sunday-go-meeting dress to college students in khaki shorts and T-shirts.

It was part pep rally, part tent revival, part circus act -- and it was all orchestrated to rev up the faithful for the coming showdown with Hillary Clinton.

Trump on the stump is a good show. He excites the crowd with his in-your-face way of speaking, and he knows how to wait for the cheering to subside before making his next statement, letting the momentum build until the last jab.

After attending the Greenville rally, we can see why Trump is so popular with some voters. He brims with confidence, and it is infectious. In him they see a return to a time when the world was a simpler place, when America was the unquestioned -- and rightful -- leader of the world.

Trump was preaching to the choir on Tuesday. And the choir was in rare form. We just wonder if there are enough choir members to get him elected.
