United Way: Annual campaign begins, and it needs your support

The United Way has begun its annual campaign to raise money to help those in need in the community.

The campaign starts off with a handful of companies that are known as the Frontrunners, who hopefully get the drive off to a good start with strong support from their employees.

But that is only the beginning. The goal of this year's campaign is to raise more than

$1.2 million by year's end toward helping improve the lives of more than 24,000 people

in Wayne County.

As United Way Director Steve Parr puts it, the purpose is not so much to raise money but to improve the lives of people who need a lift, whether it is an elderly person receiving a hot lunch from Meals on Wheels or a young person in need of a boost to get ready for his or her education.

We have been a supporter of the United Way for many years and firmly believe there is no better way to better the community in which we live than by giving generously to its annual campaign.

We hope you feel the same way. And if you haven't been giving to the campaign in the past, we hope you will consider doing so this year.
