Violence again: Airman's tragic death points up seriousness of situation

Another shooting. Another death. Another senseless tragedy.

The killing of an Air Force airman in the city is yet another crime that makes residents of Goldsboro and Wayne County wonder if there will ever be an end to the violence that has escalated of late.

The slaying leaves many questions. Who is committing these deadly shootings? Why are there so many all of a sudden? What can the authorities do about the situation?

Some say the roots of the problem lie in a lack of jobs, in a sense of hopelessness among many young men. Others cite the ease with which guns are obtainable. But neither alone justifies these acts of violence. At the root cause is a lack of respect for the lives of others.
