No filter: Trump should know better than to criticize soldier's parents

It must be getting harder and harder to be a Donald Trump supporter.

The Republican candidate for president ignited a firestorm recently when he criticized the parents of a Muslim soldier who was killed in the line of duty.

Khizr Khan and his wife, Ghazala, spoke at the Democratic National Convention, and were critical of Trump.

Trump responded in kind and, in doing so, set off a fierce debate. He has been denounced from almost every quarter, including officials in his own party.

It seems Trump has no filter, no sense of when to shut up. Supporters say it is just his temperament not let go of a slight and that he was set up, that the Democratic Party knew what it was doing when they asked the Gold Star parents to speak at the convention.

But that doesn't excuse Trump from being drawn into the controversy, from attacking a family who has lost a son in defense of this country.

A commander in chief should know better.
