No game: Don't compromise principles for the sake of money

The National Basketball Association has decided not to hold its 2017 All-Star Game in North Carolina as originally planned because of the state law requiring transgender people to use the public restroom of their natural gender and not their gender choice.

Fine. Hold it someplace else.

Opponents of the law point to the millions of dollars in lost revenue the state will suffer because of the league's decision and say the law should be repealed.

We disagree.

When the law was first approved it was obvious that there would be financial repercussions. Entertainers announced they were going to cancel their North Carolina shows because of the law, and a number of them have. Some companies also have chosen not to locate here because of the regulation. So the NBA's choice comes as no surprise.

But money isn't everything, and to kowtow to the almighty buck over principle is not the North Carolina way, no matter what newcomers to the state might think. Our lawmakers made the right decision in not repealing the law during the recent legislative session. We can live without the money if it means standing up to political correctness.
