Standing firm: General Assembly doesn't give in to threats over HB2

Despite the criticism and threats, the North Carolina General Assembly held firm in its defense of House Bill 2 during the recently adjourned session, not bending to the will of outsiders who would have the state dance to their tune.

The law, which requires transgender people to use the public restroom of their original sex, instead of their sexual preference, has drawn heat from all corners of the nation since it was approved early this year.

Much of the national press castigated lawmakers for the move, which came about after the city of Charlotte passed a law giving transgender people the right to use the public restroom of their choice.

It would have been easy to give in to the pressure, but the majority of legislators, to their credit, did not allow the criticism to sway them.

The law was amended to allow residents to continue to sue for violations of civil rights in state courts, but its core purpose was not changed.

We appreciate lawmakers' steadfast adherence to the what we believe are the principles the majority of state residents hold.
