Dogged Bernie: White House isn't Sanders' destiny, but his persistence is admirable

You have to give Bernie Sanders credit.

Where Donald Trump's political foes conceded their fight, Sanders continues to pummel away at frontrunner Hillary Clinton, even though the numbers say he cannot wrest the Democratic nomination from the former secretary of state.

With the California primary coming up, Sanders has amped up his campaign again, defying the longshot odds against him. And he is seeking a recanvass in Kentucky, where he lost to Clinton by less than one-half of 1 percent. It is a farfetched hope, but then farfetched hope is what Sanders' quixotic campaign has been about from the start.

Clinton hopes to end the primary season on a high note by taking the Golden State. Sanders, meanwhile, has told supporters that should he win it will give him crucial momentum going into the convention.

We have said that Sanders will never occupy the White House, that his views are simply too far left for the average American voter. We still believe that. But we have developed an admiration for the Vermont senator who just won't give up the ghost.
