Stick to our guns: Intimidation should not rewrite bathroom legislation

State Senate leader Phil Berger said this week that the North Carolina General Assembly has no plans in the upcoming session to change the new transgender restroom law that was approved during a recent special session.

We applaud Sen. Berger's stance and that of like-minded legislators.

Recent developments in both the business and legal communities have put pressure on the state to repeal or revise the law that requires a person to use the public restroom, not of their gender identity, but of their anatomical gender.

A number of nationally known performers and companies have said they would either not appear in North Carolina or do business here because of the law. And a federal court ruling in Virginia seems to indicate that the federal government will intervene in the issue in this state.

Let 'em.

If the federal government forces the state to adhere to its standards, then we will have to follow the law. We would have no choice.

But our lawmakers should not be the ones to cave in to the pressure being applied. Let the courts decide, if they must, but we as a state should stick to our guns until that day comes.
