Cruz cruises: Ted Cruz earns important victory in Wisconsin primary

Sen. Ted Cruz swept the Wisconsin primary Tuesday, handily defeating rivals Donald Trump and John Kasich and throwing another hurdle in the way of Trump's drive toward the Republican nomination for president before the national convention this summer.

Trump responded in typical fashion, discounting Cruz's victory in bitter terms and saying the establishment is working to stop him and his supporters. Trump's loss gives him little room for error if he wants to avoid an open convention fight.

It hasn't been a good week for the billionaire. His comment last week calling for punishment for women who have abortions set off a firestorm of criticism, although he quickly recanted the statement.

On the Democratic side Tuesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders defeated Hillary Clinton, adding strength to his campaign at a crucial juncture -- she has the edge going into the next big contest, the New York primary. Clinton represented New York in the Senate for eight years and is expected to do well there.
