A new era: At threshold of a bright future, W.A. Foster Center honors a legacy

For decades, the old W.A. Foster Center served as the heartbeat of the Webbtown portion of Goldsboro. It not only was where youth learned how to shoot their first jump shot, it was where they learned life's lessons from mentors both young and old.

Today a new Foster Center opens at Mina Weil Park, and the man for whom it is named -- a respected educator and community leader -- would be proud.

The state-of-the-art facility sports a brand new gymnasium and all the accompanying amenities. It opens a new era in the life of the city, a place that should serve for many years as the center of youth activities and more.

Not everybody agreed on the location of the new center, and some wanted to build it on the old site. But space restrictions made that impossible and wiser heads eventually prevailed.

So today, the new center opens its doors. And somewhere, Walter A. Foster is smiling.
