Double team: In attempt to take Trump down, Cruz and Rubio find common ground

Since the Republican debates began, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have worked hard at attacking one another. But now they have become loose allies in an attempt to halt Donald Trump's drive for the GOP nomination.

The ploy was on full display Thursday night as each candidate ignored one another almost completely, working in tandem instead to attack Trump, who has taken control of the Republican race.

Cruz and Rubio's tactics emphasize the precarious position they find themselves in. A straight path to winning the nomination outright seems increasingly impossible and instead they seem to be considering a plan to stop Trump at a contested convention this summer.

It's a tactic that will only work if both candidates stay in the race, taking delegates away from the billionaire as the primaries work their way across the country in the coming months.

And speaking of primaries, North Carolina's is coming up March 15, when the state's voters will get their chance to help determine the nominee. Given the trend of the past few weeks, it would be a surprise if anyone but Trump carries the state.
