Top 10: In support of military, Goldsboro and Wayne County set example for nation

The extraordinary bond between Goldsboro and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base has been recognized by the Association of Defense Communities and the Defense Communities Caucus.

Goldsboro was one of the handful of cities in the nation to be ranked among the top 10 communities in support of its local military installation. It was the only community in the Carolinas to earn the distinction and one of only two on the East Coast.

"In my 23 years of service, I have never witnessed such support and commitment from a community," said 4th Fighter Wing commander Col. Mark Slocum.

This is the first time that the organizations have honored military communities. All defense communities were invited to submit an application listing examples of the things they have done to support the military.

Goldsboro and Wayne County stood out.

The top 10 communities were selected by a panel of defense community advocates and experts from dozens of nominees. The first group of communities selected will be honored in June. For Goldsboro, it is an honor well deserved.
