Generous hearts: People of Wayne County don't allow cupboards to remain bare

The sight was a heart-wrenching one.

Empty shelves in the pantry at the Wayne County branch of the Salvation Army.

With the holidays fast approaching, officers with the charitable organization said they did not know how they would feed the needy who frequent the facility at the corner of William and Holly streets.

But all it took was a nudge and the generous hearts of the people of Goldsboro and Wayne County were touched.

Donations began to pour in immediately -- cans upon cans of non-perishable food items and other foodstuffs. Enough to fill the shelves and then some.

Don't let anyone tell you that Wayne County doesn't have warm-hearted people. People who are willing to stand up and do something when they see, or hear, about a need in their community.

All they had to hear was that the Salvation Army was in desperate straits and they came through. Just like they do with the Community Soup Kitchen when it is in need, or the Empty Stocking Fund when the holidays roll around.

So while you go about your Christmas shopping, give yourself just a little pat on the back. You made it happen.
