On duty: Local emergency personnel did not get weekend off

Most of us spent the weekend watching the water and worrying about the flooding from inside our homes.

Not so for the men and women -- volunteers and professionals -- who are in charge of the county's emergency services.

They had to stay alert, just in case someone needed help dealing with the aftermath of the heavy rains that hit the county.

And while we were lucky this time -- the really rough conditions that were expected did not materialize -- it is nice to know that they were at the ready.

There are more than a few people who dedicate their lives to this kind of service in Wayne County.

This is a chance to remember the service they provide and the risks they take -- and to say "thanks."
