TSA turmoil: This is one of those that we really need to get done right

Who would take that job?

That is the immediate reaction to the news that there is a new chief of the Transportation Security Administration.

The announcement is on the heels of at least two extremely embarrassing screwups that not only brought into question the administration of yet another federal government entity, but also made a whole lot of us wonder just how safe we are.

And when 95 percent of the dangerous weapons that were test-smuggled through airports were not caught by TSA personnel, the rest of us kind of wondered why we were enduring the endless checks and security procedures at the airport. (They sure enforce the no more than 3 ounces of liquid rule though.)

There is a much-talked-about but not-often-addressed problem with large government entities.

If they are not managed diligently and trimmed regularly, they end up as unmanageable monoliths that get nothing done.

Enter the TSA.

There is no sense in spending ridiculous amounts of money on an agency to protect us from terrorists if the work is not going to be done right and if no one is going to pay attention to hiring.

It is time for a reboot -- and to boot out a few of the incompetents in charge and on the job.

Then we can talk about the IRS.
