Good call: Commissioners give right advice to make sure money spent well

It is easy to understand why the Wayne County Board of Education might have wanted to push forward with a project at Goldsboro High School.

Nobody wanted to give the impression that the project was being shelved or ignored -- especially since the school has been on the list for funds for a long time.

But the Wayne County Board of Commissioners was right to reject the bids for the commons area at the school.

They were simply too high.

And the board deserves credit for the respectful and "let's work together" manner in which its members asked the school board to reconsider the project cost.

That is what we need to see more of out of every board in this county -- the willingness to work together for the greater good.

That spirit of cooperation is what is bringing a convention center to the city -- at a reasonable cost to benefit all.

And that is how we will continue to move forward -- progressively and as an example of how to govern right.

Bickering doesn't work, and neither does finger-pointing. Bitter partisan feuds are not terribly productive either -- just look at Washington.

So, going forward, more efforts like this will mean more improvements for residents and better use of tax dollars for homeowners.

And that is a win-win.

Now, all that is left is making sure that the Goldsboro High project remains a priority and is approved quickly so that when students return this fall, they will see a new commons area, or at least real progress toward one.
