Helping others: Local youth's achievement an example of service

Lots of people talk about the challenges this community's children face.

They wonder what it will take to make sure they get the message to stay in school and to stay away from bad influences.

T'Keya Banks knows the issue from both sides. She has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club -- and she has worked as a junior staff member.

And now she is the runner-up for the organization's Youth of the Year award.

You don't get that honor by simply improving your own life. Miss Banks is also helping other children improve theirs.

She and her family should be very proud of that accomplishment.

It would be a tough enough job to make sure she keeps her grades up and she keeps her sights steadily on her own future, but Miss Banks is there for the younger children as well, making sure they stay on the right path.

She is an example of what's right about America's young people -- and a beacon for those who wonder how a community can be there for children who need assistance.

You do it the same way Miss Banks does -- you get involved. You are a cheerleader, a coach, a tutor and you give your time.

It is a way we could all help make a difference.
