Snow trouble -- Best idea for handling winter weather: Better safe than sorry

There is no question that it would have been better for the Wayne County School District to have canceled classes last night -- or to have announced a two-hour delay this morning.

But in cases like this, hindsight is 20/20.

The schools are in a no-win situation. If they call school too early, they get criticized. And if the weather turns quickly and they are not prepared, they get hammered, too.

And while this morning's last-minute turnaround was not ideal, the bottom line is, the safety of the students is what should be most important.

So, perhaps, we can take this morning as a learning experience -- better a two-hour delay than a bunch of children who now have to be transported back home by parents who have to deal with a lack of child care because there was no way to plan.

Safety was the first consideration -- and being prudent with children who now have missed a week and one day of instruction.

But perhaps we can also cut school officials a bit of a break the next time a called school day ends in a false alarm.
