'Sniper' proof: Box office results show Americans are behind heroes

There might not have been many awards for "American Sniper" last night at the Academy Awards ceremony, but credit the evening's host, Neil Patrick Harris, with one shrewd comment.

He pointed out that $300 million of the $600 million earned by all of the Best Picture nominees this year was brought in by "American Sniper."

And while some might say that the interest doesn't mean anything, we disagree.

We think it says a lot about how America feels about its heroes -- and their families.

This is a movie as much about the after effects of war as it is one about a war -- and its message is poignant.

And while the film might still face criticism, the bottom line is simple: Americans are responding to it in droves.

Perhaps that is a sign that all is not lost and that the America that not only supported its military men and women, but stood proudly behind its flag is still out there.

We can only hope.
