State of Union: President's message tonight seems to be about legacy

It is an annual tradition that some see as just another chance for politicians to pontificate without actually meaning anything they say.

And that goes, by the way, for both Republicans and Democrats.

But the State of the Union is, nonetheless, a president's chance to outline what his country can expect from him in the coming year -- and to set a few boundaries for Congress as well.

And this year, it looks very much like this is going to be as much a speech about politics and the 2016 presidential race as it is about what the priorities should be for the new year.

President Barack Obama has an agenda this year. Far from being a lame duck, although his wings were clipped a little after his party's big losses this November, he is planning all sorts of initiatives and executive actions to do what he thinks needs to be done before he leaves office.

And for those of you who are not familiar with the machinations of the political power structure in Washington, this is his chance to cement his legacy -- or how history will view his administration. And he is making sure not only that he panders to the groups that will sing his praises -- but also those who will turn out for Democrats in 2016.

Preserving a legacy is a big deal. Just ask Jimmy Carter or George H.W. Bush.

But making sure your party does not lose every chance to lead is an even bigger one.

So as you listen tonight, watch carefully for the words "executive order" and pay attention to the tone of the president's address.

Keep your ears open for any mention of the issues that matter to you -- and see if the president's take jibes with yours.

It will give you a clue about what to expect in 2015 -- and beyond.
