Fitting tribute: New memorial in Washington acknowledges all heroes

The number of American veterans who live with the daily reminders of the cost of war is escalating -- especially over the last few years of the battles in the Middle East.

They bear scars of all kinds -- and they will live with the memories and the consequences of those injuries for the rest of their lives.

And while many of us honor them and support efforts like the Wounded Warriors Project, it is fitting that there is a reminder of the price these men and women have paid for our freedom. There should be a spot where any American can come and say thank you and vow never to forget.

The new memorial in Washington is designed specifically to honor the courage and the sacrifices that have been made by America's disabled veterans. It reminds all of us that the cost of freedom is not only in lost lives, but in lives that are changed forever.

The memorial is just a start. We need to support as a nation more efforts to help these veterans and their families.

They struggle not only with the physical losses but the emotional consequences of their injuries as well.

It is our duty to be there for them now -- just as they were there for us.
