Built to last: Labor Day is a chance to remember something else ... hard work

We forget sometimes that there is another meaning to Labor Day.

It is a tribute to the men and women whose hard work, ideas and risk-taking built this country.

Perhaps we should use this day to remember the principles that create a successful nation.

Perhaps we should honor the free enterprise, opportunity and entrepreneurship that created the companies where Americans have prospered and innovated for generations.

It is funny how often we forget the people who started the corporations that we are so ready to disparage today -- and the workers who were part of their success because they had the free will to choose where they worked and for whom.

America is a nation of workers. It is not in our nature to sit back and to wait for someone to do the job. We like to get busy.

So today we should celebrate that industry -- and remember what it takes to sustain it.
