Local matters: Keeping an eye on local candidates critical to community's future

Sometimes it seems like the only elections that matter are the national ones.

So, when the talk begins about the midterm elections and the 2016 presidential race, it is easy to forget that there are local positions up for grabs right here in your own community.

Such is the case this fall.

There are several very important positions on the ballot in Wayne County this November -- and some of the most critical are contested races.

So even though you have a lot to do -- and even though the grind of school has begun, it is critical that you spend a little time learning about the men and women who want to represent you.

And that research should also be squeezed in with continued attention to what might be one of the most important elections this state has seen in a while -- the battle to represent North Carolina in the U.S Senate.

You will have the chance to have your say this fall. Please make sure that it is an informed vote that you cast. Ask the questions. Do the research -- and give the high-priced TV ads a critical eye.

The decision on where to cast your vote matters -- and the attention should start at home.
