Spending: Continuing discussion and eyeing plans is good idea for city

Everybody likes a little progress -- especially when it means that there will be big benefits down the line.

But Goldsboro City Council is considering carefully its next steps with regard to the downtown Union Station project and other developments in the area.

The concern? Making sure the city has the money and that it is being spent wisely -- and that it should not be spent somewhere else.

The consideration? Whether there will be an opportunity to get this kind of funding again.

And both are valid points.

Bottom line is that everyone is looking harder at where money is going and how it should be spent.

And while there are points on both sides, the encouraging sign is that there is a discussion.

Taking a hard look at projects and plans and re-evaluating if necessary are critical steps in the progress of a community.

And as long as those discussions are done with facts and figures and true measures of benefit vs. risk, the news is good and a positive sign for the future of Goldsboro.
