Results: All governments should be judged on what they do, not say

In the real world, if a chief executive officer or any of the top brass of a company make promises they do not keep, or if a company underperforms, the board of directors makes a change.

As 2014 begins and we all start to keep closer track of what our leaders locally, statewide and nationally are doing, we should consider ourselves the board of directors.

That means we need to seriously consider whether we want to make some changes and exactly whom we want to be in charge.

And the first criterion for making that selection ought to be a simple measure -- results.

Did the leaders in question improve the county, city, state or nation?

Did they make promises and keep them?

Did they represent themselves honestly and avoid the backroom antics?

Do you see them in public other than around election time?

If the answers are in the affirmative, perhaps it is worth giving them more time.

If not, you know exactly what to do.
