Public servant: Longtime volunteer should inspire others to get involved

Of course Ollie Toomey did not really want to be the center of attention at the social called in his honor this week by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.

Of course he did not want to be credited with making a real difference in his community or to listen to his list of accomplishments that stretches across decades.

That's not why he has worked so tirelessly for so many for so many years.

It was simply the right thing to do.

People like Ollie Toomey do not come around very often. They are the true definition of the term "servant-leader" seeking nothing in return for the hours, the attention and the expertise they offer others.

And most attribute their desire to serve to the lessons their parents taught them about giving back.

More parents should teach those lessons today -- and more of us should think about following Mr. Toomey's example.

There is so much so many of us could contribute to making this community a better place -- and often we let our own busy lives keep us from getting involved.

But it is in that contribution that we make this community stronger.

All we have to do is take the first step.

Mr. Toomey has already shown us the way.
