Chance to give: On Veterans Day, let's take care of some needy base families

We hope that by the time you read this, there will be no more need to help round out the collections for the 350 base families who otherwise would struggle to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for their families.

We hope we have so many donations that there isn't room for any more.

But just in case, please check -- and offer a little something to help those whose family members help keep this country safe.

Any extra food that is donated will be transported to the base as well -- to give those who are running its food drive the chance to get ahead on their Christmas holiday baskets.

This is our chance -- and there is no better day for it than today -- to show that we mean what we say when we tell people that this community takes care of its military members.

It is our chance to say "thank you" with a turkey, some mashed potatoes and some corn.

And we feel sure there will be many, many people who will step up to the plate -- and that there will not be one family left without help this holiday season.

It is the least we can do.
