It's fair time: Wayne County's big event is well worth the time

If you have never been to the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair, you are in for a treat.

Not only is all the good stuff there -- the rides, the food and the cows, pigs and chickens -- there are also plenty of other ways to spend a nice evening as a family.

Oh, and did we mention it is a cheap date?

This is a professional fair -- run by volunteers who know their stuff. They know how to do this right -- and to make sure local families will have a good time.

The ride provider has a long-standing relationship with the fair board, which means you don't have to worry if you go -- these people have been vetted.

The fair is safe. It is family-friendly, and it includes local organizations as well as the usual fair vendors.

But most importantly, this fair allows local families to share a little of the history of the industry that built their community -- agriculture.

You will see some of the men and women who are in the business now and hear about some traditions that are decades-old.

And you get to meet some of the next generation of family farmers -- and to celebrate their achievements as you watch them show off their 4-H projects.

And best of all, you can share with your children some of the best things in life -- homemade jams, jellies and pies, collectables from the "good old days" and a sense of life beyond television and video games.

There is a reason this county's fair is an award-winner every year.

Don't miss your chance to be there when the gates open Thursday.

There will be candy apples to spare.

And don't forget to cheer on your favorite chicken.
