Can-do drive: Reader's idea is perfect plan for Sunday services

Sometimes the best ideas come from people who are just sitting around thinking.

And that is exactly what happened when Theresa English sat down to think about the need for food at the Salvation Army food pantry.

She came up with a great idea -- and one we hope you will take part in this weekend at your local church.

Her request is simple: When you come to services on Saturday or Sunday, bring a can of food.

That's it. Nothing complicated. No long list of dos and don'ts.

Just bring a can of food.

Mrs. English and her husband have offered to pick up the donations, but some of the larger churches could help her out by bringing their donations to the food pantry themselves. We would also be happy to take any donations here at the News-Argus and we will get them to the Salvation Army.

This is a great project for any youth group -- and if your youngsters get involved, send us a photo. We would like to acknowledge their contributions as well.

This community never needs to be asked twice when there is a real need in this county -- or when their neighbors need help.

So, we feel confident that Mrs. English's call for food will be met with kind words and tons of cans.

Remember, this doesn't have to be fancy -- and there is no need for some great big bureaucratic arrangement.

Just bring a can. If you aren't sure what to bring, consider items that will make a meal -- ravioli, beef stew, chili or canned meat.

Other non-perishables are also welcome -- consider rice, pasta or other meal-stretchers.

If even half of the congregations in this county participated, there would be no one going to bed hungry in this county for at least the next month.

We can't wait to see how you answer the call.
