Miley shock: An awful lot of people are talking about ex-Disney star's bizarre act

If you didn't see it, you did not miss much. Just think back to the attention-getting garbage that Britney Spears tried more than a few years ago -- and add a few teddy bears. It even looked like a similar set of underwear.

While there is much more important stuff to talk about than Miley Cyrus' attempt to prove to the world that she is no longer Disney's sweetheart, the act itself has implications worth examining.

Of course, the first that comes to mind is that the entertainment industry is more than a bit out of control -- and it is destroying young lives.

Is there really a need for graphic debauchery 24 hours a day and with no regard to who might be watching?

Surely Robin Thicke should have known better. After all, he is a father, too.

And the second is -- are there ever going to be any role models anymore?

Exactly where does a parent turn to find someone with some values to allow his or her daughter or son to admire?

Perhaps it is time to point them in a different direction and away from the music scene and Hollywood.

During a week when a speech that changed the world should have been the topic of conversation, we are talking about Miley Cyrus' rear end.

How sad. How fitting and how truly an example of how far afield we have gone as a culture and as a nation.

There are heroes to learn from -- and they are explained fully in history books and biographies. Those books offer stories of people whose lives mattered and who changed the world. There are even videos that detail their lives and accomplishments.

And while their lives might not have been perfect, they have some great lessons to teach -- unless of course you want your 12-year-old to have an intimate knowledge of "twerking."

Maybe it is time to turn off MTV and the video games and to head on over to the library -- and maybe keep an eye on TV and movies, too.

Just a thought.
