Progress? Yes. New store openings say something about county's future.

There will be some who will giggle about the fuss being made about a new grocery store opening in Goldsboro -- just as they smiled a bit when residents eagerly anticipated two new restaurants a couple years ago.

But the reason the news of Harris Teeter, Jo-Ann Fabrics and the other recent openings and announcements for the county is so exciting is what it says about the future.

Contrary to public opinion, you cannot will a new business to open -- especially if it is a national chain.

To get a new restaurant or retail business, your community has to pass a rigorous set of standards and minimums.

After all, this is not a popularity contest. It is business.

So, achieving so many openings in so little time says something about the possibilities in this community.

It says locating in Wayne County must be good for business.

So, as the new commission continues its work -- and Goldsboro City Council does as well -- tops on their agendas should be not messing up this boom.

And that will require sound fiscal management, no craziness and wise policies that encourage investment.

Consider that, gentlemen, Job 1.
