Debate is good: Several issues have prompted Americans to get involved

There are more than a few issues before the state and federal governments right now that are causing more than a little debate among people.

And while it can sometimes get tiresome listening to all the talk, truth is this is healthy -- and what should be happening in America right now.

One of the most worrisome concerns that many people who care about the future of this country have had to deal with over the past few years is apathy. Citizens simply went through the motions and accepted whatever decisions were handed down.

Not so anymore.

A healthy democracy -- or a republic -- requires a certain amount of citizen participation. That is how the will of the people gets to those who are supposed to be listening and acting on their behalf.

So let the debate continue. It is what makes this country special -- and what keeps freedom strong.
