Plan to give: Psyched about Black Friday? Remember Giving Tuesday.

There is no question that there is a certain amount of excitement associated with the Black Friday shopping extravaganza.

Especially now that it begins on Thursday.

But there is another event to be excited about -- and one that could make a difference for a lot of local organizations that help the needy.

The United Way of Wayne County is spearheading a local version of a national movement -- Giving Tuesday.

The concept is simple: Shop until you drop Friday and then donate a little time or money to a local charitable effort on Tuesday.

It does not have to be much -- just a few items to help them offset a bit of the extra costs that go along with the holiday season. The list includes everything from copier paper to diapers.

Pick the organization that plucks at your heartstrings and make a donation -- or if you have more time than money this year, offer your services as a volunteer.

What a fitting way to begin the Christmas season, which is, after all, supposed to be more about giving than receiving anyway.

In tomorrow's newspaper, we will update the list of organizations that have offered up wish lists for the day. Take a look at them, and while you are out shopping Friday, pick up a little something to help one of these groups make a difference in someone's life this holiday season.

It is not surprising how hard it is to remember the need during the holiday season. The busy pace takes its toll on good intentions as we scurry to get everything done.

Here's a chance to designate one day for just such an effort. We hope you will join us.
