Helping hands: Area charities trying to make sure no one will miss holiday dinner

It is easy to forget that there is need in this county -- especially when you do not see it every day.

So, as many families juggle their busy lives, it is easy to put off that canned food donation or to forget to send a check to help local charities provide food baskets for the holidays.

But, unfortunately, time is running out.

To make sure families will have food for Thanksgiving, many charities have to work several days ahead assembling the baskets and preparing the meals. They will give out baskets based on the donations they receive. And if they cannot meet the need, the families will be left with nowhere else to turn.

But that is where we come in.

Part of Thanksgiving should always include sharing a little of the wealth we have enjoyed in the past year with others -- and reminding ourselves how lucky we are to be able to have a holiday feast with family and friends.

By contributing to one of the local efforts to make sure all Wayne County families can share a holiday meal, you are making a needy family part of your own celebration.

There is no better way to give thanks.
