Good news: New jobs announcement great sign for county

So it would have been nice to have had an announcement of 300-400 new jobs and a new plant deciding that Wayne County is the place to put down roots.

But, OK, baby steps.

In this economy, news of 44 new jobs and the expansion of a local business is nothing to sneeze at -- and it could be a sign of things to come.

You have to be careful with incentives, especially if what you spend in tax dollars ends up giving each of those new jobs a hefty price tag. But today's announcement of the pending expansion in Pikeville is a good sign -- and a reminder.

There is economic development to be had right here at home.

When local businesses and industries expand, this county prospers -- and acknowledging those efforts and making it easy for companies to grow here is as critical as attracting new investment.

So, cheers to those who made it happen. Hopefully it is a sign of more good news ahead.
