Done deal? It seems hard to believe that there will really be a governor's race

Another candidate for the soon-to-be-empty empty governor's chair has thrown his hat into the ring, officially.

Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, who has been in Raleigh with Gov. Bev Perdue this past year, is now filed the paperwork to be a candidate.

And most of North Carolina is finally seeing him -- a few areas for the first time, really -- since he took office. We can honestly say that in eastern North Carolina we have seen the first gentleman more.

And that brings up a very important point as we begin to try to unravel the tangled web that is about to become the Democratic race for governor.

Who are these people? What do they stand for? And how are they going to put this state back together? And if they are already in office, what have they been doing for North Carolina since we "hired" them?

And while we are at it, perhaps we ought to see where a few of the political family trees lead -- we certainly do not need another round of ethics investigations.

We hope we can get the answers in time -- and a clear indication of the choices that will be available come fall.

Otherwise, we might as well save the money.
