Tons of care: Scouts are building a mammoth hunger-relief effort. We can help.

Ever wonder what it would be like to see 25 tons of donated food?

Well, this is the weekend to find out.

Scouts from all across the area will be out tomorrow picking up the bags they left at homes across the county as part of Scouting for Food -- a drive to help local food pantries restock their shelves.

The idea is to remind the community that the needy do not stop being hungry or needing assistance once the holidays are over.

The Scouts have worked hard to get the bags and the word out.

Now it is up to their community to show them what happens when everyone pitches in to help.

Put your bag out Saturday morning and fill it with canned foods or other nonperishable items.

A Scout will come by and pick it up.

But as you can imagine, it would be tough for a few Scouts to cover every home in one day.

So, if you did not get a bag at your home, please stop by the trailer that will be parked at Berkeley Mall Saturday and leave your donation with the Scouts there.

This is not just a chance to help the hungry. It is a chance to show some young men the value of serving others -- and to prove to them that their community cares and believes in what they are doing.

That is certainly worth a stop at the mall and a few cans from your pantry.
