DUDLEY -- Demetric Wright piled up 82 yards and a touchdown during Southern Wayne's season-opening, 31-14 loss to Wilmington Ashley on Friday evening.
The Saints led 6-0 at the break on the strength of Wright's 4-yard TD plunge.
Ashley seized control with a 17-point, third-quarter outburst.
"We started off strong in the first half and then let the heat, adversity and other elements of the game get to us in the second half," SW head coach Ronnie McClary Jr. said. "[We're] looking forward to correcting our mistakes and moving on."
Taylen West took a 78-yard kickoff return back to the house in the fourth quarter. Tashawn Philips and Barnes hooked for the two-point conversion pass.
Wright completed four passes for 125 and threw a pair of picks. West ended the night with two receptions for 76 yards.
The Saints accumulated 303 yards of total offense.
Southern Wayne (0-1 overall) plays host to James Kenan on Friday.
