Perennial Senior American Legion baseball powerhouse Garner Post 232 swatted a first-inning home run and cruised to a 9-5, non-division win over Wayne County Post 11 on Thursday evening.
Post 11 lost for the first time in three outings this season.
"We played a good team tonight...saw some good pitching I thought and Garner doesn't have all of their players," first-year WC Post 11 head coach Adam Pate said.
"We got punched in the mouth and we did a good job of responding. They found some holes. It was just one of those games."
University of Mount Olive commit Kolby Harris endured the mound loss in his first-ever Legion start.
Garner hit a two-run blast in the first inning, which eventually led to an 8-1 lead through 4 1/2 innings of play.
Wayne County put the first two runners aboard with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning with its 4-5-6 batters due to see action.
Post 11 cut Garner's lead in half, 8-4, but could never get any closer.
The teams traded single runs over the final two innings.
Tucker Chapin, a first-year Legion performer, and returnee Jonathan "JP" Peacock each made an appearance out of the bullpen.
Wayne County returns to action Tuesday at Wallace Post 156. Game time is 7 p.m. on the Wallace-Rose Hill diamond.
Post 11 returns home next Saturday to play Morehead and opens its Area I East slate with a twinbill against Edenton on June 3.
