Chargers honored during season-ending spring awards ceremony

Wayne Country Day concluded its spring sports season with an awards ceremony Wednesday evening.
Michael Taylor, athletics director at WCDS, announced that the school won the prestigious Wells Fargo Cup for the third consecutive year. The Cup recognizes the top interscholastic athletic program based on their calendar-year performance in the sports arena.
The Sam Patrick Award winners were Hannah Neal (female) and Jack Talton (male). The award honors a life-time athlete at the school.
The Tom Jones Award winners were Kyara Drew (female) and Cole Atwood (male). The Award is presented to student-athletes who display the values associated with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and sportsmanship.
The Headmaster Scholar-Athlete Award winners were Jennifer Potts (female) and Zander Pittman (male). Potts helped lead the Chargers to an unprecedented fifth consecutive N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A women's dual-team tennis title last fall.
Potts and Pittman received the Coastal Plains Independent Conference (CPIC) Scholastic Award.
Jack Talton and Lexi Jeffreys earned the CPIC Sportsmanship Awards.
Student-athletes were recognized in seven sports.
The recipients were:
• Varsity Girls' Soccer: Most Improved Award -- Lexi Jeffreys; Team Player Award -- Jennifer Potts. CPIC All-Conference -- Langley Barnes, Jasmine Jones, Hayden Nielsen, Kathryn Hamilton, Ashton Gupton. CPIC Player-of-the-Year -- Barnes. CPIC Coach-of-the-Year -- Steve Ellis. NCISAA 1-A All-State Team -- Barnes, Nielsen.
• Varsity Boys' Tennis: Most Improved Award -- Max Young; Coaches Award -- Charlie Dees; Most Valuable Player -- Sam Dively. NCISAA 1-A All-State Team -- Dively, Alec Fritzinger.
• Varsity Baseball: Senior Awards -- Cole Brewer, Jack Talton, Ryan Hopes, Ryan Smith, Amane Godo. CPIC All-Conference -- Hopes, Tanner Willman, Case Kermode, Avery Browning, Godo and Brewer. CPIC Player-of-the-Year -- Kermode. CPIC Coach-of-the-Year -- Michael Taylor. NCISAA 1-A All-State Team -- Godo, Kermode, Browning.
• Golf: Senior Award -- Ryan Thiele; MVP -- Joey Democko.
• Girls' Track and Field: Track Award -- Grayson Jeffreys; Coach Award -- Kate Hower, Kaylee Ostendorf.
• Boys' Track and Field: Senior Award -- Joseph Shao, Nick Fletcher, Luis Lopez, Suraj Patel.
• JV Baseball: Charger Award -- Trey Barnes; Most Improved Award -- Jack Crocker; MVP -- Carnes Edmondson.

• Boys' Swimming: Leadership Award -- Zander Pittman; Heart Of A Champion Award -- Carnes Edmondson.
• Girls' Swimming: Leadership Award -- Payton Jackson; Heart Of A Champion Award -- Laurel Hinson.
• Varsity Girls' Basketball: Coaches Award -- Langley Barnes; Most Improved Award -- Whitney Hoskins; Offensive Player-of-the-Year -- Lexi Jeffreys; Defensive Player-of-the-Year -- Jala Holloman. NCISAA 1-A All-State Team -- Jeffreys, Holloman.
• Varsity Boys' Basketball: Coaches Award -- Cooper Edmondson; Most Improved Award -- Jaden Cooper; Offensive Player-of-the-Year -- Marcus Metcalf; Defensive Player-of-the-Year -- Javon Outlaw.
• JV Girls' Basketball: Coaches Award -- Nicole Zuccarelli; Offensive Player-of-the-Year -- Ja'Kae Brunson; MVP -- Hayden Nielsen.
• JV Boys Basketball: Coaches Award -- Tanner Willman; Most Improved -- Ja'Corey Brunson; Offensive Player-of-the-Year -- Cam Gerrard; Defensive Player-of-the-Year -- Dylan Brown.
• Middle School Boys' Basketball: Charger Award -- Berkley Woodard; Most Improved Award -- Brandon Harringer; MVP -- Jack Cole.
