MOUNT OLIVE -- One first-round bye is secure in the season-ending Area I East Division playoffs.
Pitt County Post 39 made sure of it Wednesday evening with a 6-1 victory over Wayne County Post 11 at Scarborough Field on the University of Mount Olive campus.
Post 39 claimed its second straight regular-season division crown.
WC right-hander Jonathan Peacock scattered six hits, walked three, retired five Pitt County batters on strikeouts and yielded three earned runs in eight innings of work.
Peacock (2-2) sat down eight consecutive Post 39 batters before giving up three consecutive hits that allowed the visitors to grab a 4-1 lead in the top half of the fifth inning.
Kolby Anderson threw the ninth.
Pitt County collected 10 hits on the night.
Wayne County managed six hits -- two each by lead-off man Jack Casbarro and catcher Lance Wise. Derek Neal, Carlyle Smith and Hayden Amodeo provided one hit apiece.
Amodeo connected on a lead-off triple to start the third inning. After a walk to Anderson, Amodeo scored on Casbarro's base knock -- his 21st of the season.
Wayne County struck out 11 times and left 10 runners on base, including three in the fourth inning.
Post 11 concluded regular-season play at home Thursday against nemesis Wilson Post 13. Wayne County (11-8 overall, 8-3 East) defeated Wilson in their first meeting.
The winner clinched the second bye for the division tournament, which begins quarterfinal-round play Saturday. Each series is a best-of-three format.
