MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team received the 2016-17 Conference Carolinas Messick Sportsmanship Award.
The honor is the third for the Trojans, who earned the award during the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons. The men's basketball team is the second UMO athletic squad to claim the honor after the women's cross country team received the accolade this past fall.
Each conference coach votes on the sportsmanship of opposing players, coaches, and the atmosphere of the institution as a whole - fans and staff. These votes are collected at the end of each playing season and averaged to determine a winner for each sport. Those scores are then tallied to determine the overall Messick Award Winner.
