Women's basketball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Ni'Ya Styles reached 1,000 points for her career, but the University of Mount Olive endured a 69-57 loss to Conference Carolinas foe King (Tenn.) University on Tuesday evening.

Styles reached the milestone on her fourth 3-pointer with 5:38 left in regulation. The junior finished with 22 points.

Makayla Nichols pumped in 11 points and Daria Simmons contributed 10 points.

The Trojan women (20-6 overall, 17-4 CC) close out regular-season play at home Friday against arch rival Barton College. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.

Baseball

MOUNT OLIVE -- North Duplin alum Trey Pate emerged as the winning pitcher, and the University of Mount Olive cranked out a 15-7 non-conference triumph over St. Augustine's at Scarborough Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Pate permitted seven runs (two earned) on seven hits and filed three strikeouts in 62/3 innings on the bump.

Zach Mozingo led the Trojans' offense with three hits and five RBI.

Mount Olive (7-3 overall) visits in-state nemesis Catawba today.

Men's basketball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Sophomore Jamal Matin scored 15 points during the University of Mount Olive's 77-65 loss to Conference Carolinas foe King (Tenn.) University on Tuesday evening.

Saiquan Jamison added 13 points for the Trojans, who dipped to 8-19 overall and 7-12 against league opposition this season. Tyler Thomas and Armond Griebe contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Trojans conclude regular-season play at home Friday against arch rival Barton. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.

Women's lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE -- Wingate built a five-goal lead in the second half and held off University of Mount Olive, 10-8, in a non-conference game contested at the Ray McDonald Sr. Track & Field/Lacrosse Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Michela Ciciarelli paced the Trojan attack with four goals. Saffron Snethen, sophomore Hailey Dobbins, Jackie Kaderabek and Kelly Young contributed one goal apiece.

Sophomore goalie Samantha Thompson (2-1) made five saves during first-half action.

Mount Olive (4-1 overall) plays host to Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.

Players recognized

HIGH POINT -- University of Mount Olive's Austin Hutchinson was named the Conference Carolinas baseball pitcher-of-the-week for games played Feb. 13-19.

Hutchinson threw eight innings of shutout ball and collected 10 strikeouts during a 1-0 victory over No. 6-ranked USC Aiken.

The Trojans' Martin Moser was selected as the league's men's tennis-player-of-the-week. In a 6-3 victory over Chowan, Moser contributed with wins in singles and doubles.

Moser won the award for the second time this season.

UMO placed 12 student-athletes on the 2017 Conference Carolinas men's and women's indoor track and field all-academic team -- Adam Craig, Davide Cuccurullo, Jonathan Dahlke, Pol Domenech-Ferrer, Nick Greyno, Jacob Urys, Benjamin Veith, Shona Blades, Danille Heymach, Alexis McNeill, Shania Riffle and Chelsea Van Dijk.

Setter Jeff Yasalonis earned the Conference Carolinas men's volleyball player-of-the-week. The junior averaged 10.37 assists and 1.87 digs per set during two league victories last week -- a 56-assist, five-set decision over King (Tenn.) University and a double-double (27 assists, 10 digs) against Lees-McRae.

Yasalonis ranks 23rd nationally with 9.44 assists per set.

Kiara Jones claimed Conference Carolinas women's basketball player-of-the-week honors. Jones averaged 22 points and 8.5 rebounds during two Trojan victories over arch rival Barton and Erskine (S.C.) College.

Jones currently averages a double-double -- 12 points, 10.5 rebounds -- for the season. UMO entered the week ranked No. 10 in the latest Division II Southeast Region poll.
